More information:
The Madison Wetland Management District is part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's National Wildlife Refuge system. The Madison office oversees 350 Waterfowl Production Areas (WPA's) in 17 counties of SE South Dakota. This office has been planting High Diversity grasslands on WPA's for over 10 years. This has led to the creation of almost 4,000 acres of grasslands composed of 45+ species of native grasses and forbs. To accomplish this, native seed is often bought from local vendors -- but it is also harvested and processed by the team and volunteers. Seed is harvested in a variety of ways, from combines to hand harvesting, and the process is done with specialized equipment at the station.
