Blue Mountain Pheasants Forever Hands-On Habitat Workday
Our Hands-On Habitat project includes building brush piles at the Chapter's long-term habitat development site on Sudbury Road near Walla Walla, Washington. In cooperation with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, we will build new brush piles out of discarded Christmas trees donated by the Walla Walla Scouts to serve as wildlife shelter and nesting habitat.
The new brush piles will be in a different location than our prior few, which have been highly successful in encouraging valley quail to remain resident in this shrub-steppe habitat area. Not only do these brush piles offer a safe haven from predators, but an edge-feathering technique with trees placed around the base of the pile provides nesting cover as bunchgrasses grow up through and over the trees.
If time permits, we will perform some routine maintenance on our nearly mile-long shelterbelt, which we continually expand and enhance. Join us and enjoy songbirds, upland birds, mule deer, and beautiful wildflowers like purple lupine as you work. You won't want to miss this day!
Please register to ensure we know how many helping hands we will have.
