Post Fire Habitat Restoration

Join us to gain hands-on skills in habitat restoration by rebuilding low-tech mesic structures damaged in the House Draw Fire in Johnson County, WY. Volunteers will help by removing and replacing burnt posts and weaving willow branches through repaired structures. These simple, natural techniques support vital habitats that benefit both wildlife and livestock.

Low-tech mesic restoration focuses on enhancing moist habitats, or "mesic" areas, using natural materials and minimal equipment. These habitats play a key role in capturing water and nutrients, stabilizing soil, and providing food and cover for diverse species.

Our restoration efforts will include rebuilding hand-crafted "Zeedyk" structures, which use natural materials to reduce erosion, slow water flow, and spread water across the landscape. By guiding water back to its natural course, these structures help reconnect floodplains, promote vegetation growth, and increase resilience against drought, all while providing nutritious forage for wildlife like upland game birds, deer, and livestock.

Please bring gloves, sunglasses/eye protection, sturdy shoes/boots, water, and lunch. Tools will be provided, but if you have post hole diggers, shovels, or tamping bars, they would be much appreciated!
