Snake River Quail Forever, Caldwell Gun Club, K Bar T Pheasant Shooting Preserve, and dog/handler pairs from the finest gun dog organizations in Idaho's Treasure Valley are collaborating again to prepare another group of young hunters to venture into Idaho's uplands.

Over seven course meetings, students from 12 to 17 years of age will learn to safely hunt upland birds on the wing.  Topics taught include eye dominance, gun fit, safe firearm manipulation, gun mount, stance, sight picture, target engagement techniques, hunting over dogs, and more.

The class will meet the following Sundays:  8/18, 8/25, 9/8, 9/15, 9/22, 9/29, and 10/6.  The first three class meetings will take place at the Caldwell Gun Club from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.  Subsequent meetings may take place at other venues, depending on how the group's overall shooting skill progresses.   A morning hunt of planted gamebirds will take place on Sunday, 10/6, at K Bar T Pheasant Preserve located 30 minutes east of Boise.  The students will be paired with a mentor and dog handler who will assist them in hunting and harvesting planted game birds.

Students are required to have successfully completed an Idaho-recognized Hunter Education course PRIOR to starting this course.  Hunter Education grads are safer with firearms and in the field.  Students are required to possess a hunting license or Hunting Passport to participate in the preserve hunt
.

Students are required to provide the following at each class session: eye protection, hearing protection and a means of carrying extra ammunition.  Students will need to have 75 rounds of shotgun ammunition available each session.

Students are welcome to bring a shotgun for use during the class.  A limited number of reduced length 20 gauge shotguns are available for use during class at no charge.  Parents are encouraged to consult with an instructor prior to purchasing a shotgun for their child.

Course tuition covers the cost of the clay targets, game birds, and refreshments.  The program is taught by volunteers.  Our partners provide their services at steep discounts or at no cost.  We do this to share our love of upland hunting and grow the upland hunting community.

We ask that returning students who have completed the course previously to wait until 8/5 to sign up for the course to ensure new students have access to the program.  Questions may be directed to Chris Hansen, Youth Chair, Snake River Quail Forever, at (208) 286-1953 or via email to bruin1942@gmail.com.
