Spot Fire Suppression Training for Conservation Partners
When prescribed fire is planned and conducted responsibly, the chance of fire getting outside the designated burn unit is low, however, the chance is still present. In this training we will spend the morning in the classroom discussing the aspects of planning, preparation, and implementing prescribed burns that reduce the chance of fire getting outside the burn unit. We will then take to the field in the afternoon to demonstrate the response to fire outside the burn unit and use prescribed burn equipment to suppress and extinguish the fire. You will have the opportunity to participate with a crew to gain hands-on experience. The field exercise will be in a prepared and controlled location with participant and public safety the utmost priority.
Participants must bring and wear fire resistant (e.g. Nomex) pants and long-sleeved shirt or clothing of natural fibers (cotton/denim), leather boots, leather gloves, eye and ear protection. You must also abide by your agency's/organization's fire PPE standards. Contact wbuchheit@quailforever.org if you are in need of some or all of these items.
Bring your own sack lunch and a water bottle to easily carry in the field. We will have drinking water coolers in the field for refilling.
This will be a live fire event so weather may cause us to cancel. If we cancel, you will be notified by email on Thursday March 21 at noon.
This is a free event but the process to register is to "purchase" a free ticket. You will not be charged for the ticket and no payment information is collected. Add a ticket(s) to the Cart, Check Out, enter your name and email, and Get Tickets. Please include the PBA name you are a member of. You do not need to bring a ticket with you. If you have any questions about this process, please email wbuchheit@quailforever.org.
