Pheasants Forever's Women on the Wing program and HerUpland are proud to announce the second annual Wisconsin Women's Upland Bird Camp! New friends, learning, camaraderie, quality time in the woods and prairies (plus delicious wild game) are all on the menu.
Hosted at Crex Meadows Wildlife Area in Northwest Wisconsin the last weekend in October, this class will focus on delivering the skills and connections to ethically and safely hunt grouse, woodcock, and pheasant. Things get started with a virtual class (covering regulations, strategy, gear, biology, and in-the-field safety) a week before camp.
Arrival at camp will be Friday afternoon, October 27. After check-in, women will have a chance to get settled in the dorms before they do some firearm handling and claybird shooting. After shooting, a social hour and mentor-mentee pairings will round out the evening. Saturday will be a full day in the uplands, hunting behind a trained pointing or retrieving dog, and in the company of an experienced mentor. Saturday evening will feature a gamebird cleaning demonstration followed by a wild game dinner and game cooking talk. An optional bonfire will close out a full day afield.
Sunday will be an optional hunting day with checkout at 2 PM.
Attendees must be at least 18 years old and must have completed hunter safety. A Pheasants Forever membership, a Wisconsin Small Game Hunting license plus HIP certification must be obtained prior to class. There will be a $50 per person food/lodging fee. Bring proof of your PF membership, license, and $50 in cash when you check in at camp.
Food, gear, and bunkhouse accommodation will be provided. Those who want private lodging are welcome to find a room at their own expense. To maximize learning opportunities, this class is open only to women with little or no experience in upland hunting. Please note that a majority of dog handlers, mentors, and instructors will be women.
